HOME : INFO CENTER : REPLICATION OR DUPLICATION?

You have created a multimedia presentation and want to copy it onto CD. Should you have the CD duplicated or replicated? The main factors to consider before making a decision are: the quantity of CDs required, how quickly you need them and your budget.

If you need 1000 or more CDs, replication is the better option. The top quality, offset onbody print will be used on the CDs and they will be shop quality. If your 1000 CD total comprises of 10 titles of 100 CDs each, then duplication will be necessary. Creating glass masters and the setup of replication equipment is expensive. Only in large quantities will the costs be absorbed and lower the per unit price. What happens if you need the 1000 CDs in two days for a trade show? Your only option will be duplication. CD replication times are usually approx ten working days. If you need any project done in a few days, only duplication can be realistically accommodated.

The standard print for a duplicated job is an inkjet or screen print. The standard print for a replicated job is an offset print. The quality of these printing processes differs and, depending on your artwork, your results can vary significantly. We cover CD printing in more detail here. Finally, consider your budget. Printing and duplicating 1000 CDs is more expensive than replicating 1000 CDs. From quantities of 500 and above, the prices are about the same, but below 500 CDs, duplicating is the cheaper option. If you need more than 300 DVDs, we always recommend that you choose replication instead of duplication.
